The Brief

The Big Bang Fair is the UK’s biggest festival of STEM for young people and exists to encourage more 11 – 18 year olds to choose STEM subjects and careers. In 2019, we saw a spike in entries to the Fair’s science competition about reducing plastic waste – and so we made this the focus of what became an incredibly successful idea.

The Big Idea

We challenged two young professional synchronised swimmers to attempt their world championship routine in a swimming pool full of household plastic waste.

Alongside this beautiful and shocking imagery, we championed the young people turning to STEM to find solutions to ocean plastic waste – shining a light on Big Bang Fair finalist Luke De Bretton-Gordon and his invention of edible water bottles, which could eradicate single-use plastic bottles.
