In a world where swiping left means you don’t necessarily meet the person of your dreams, there may just be a better method to find a date, and it’S not one you can download on your smartphone. So this year, those looking for love, or even friendship, on Valentine’s day were able to put their fates in the hands of a very different type of matchmaker: an octopus called Ken.
The ‘cupid of cephalopods’ was adopted by The Kraken Black Spiced Rum as a tentacle’d alternative to the various apps, lonely hearts columns, well-meaning friends and speed-dating events currently on offer to singletons this February. Inspired by legendary animal oracle Paul the Octopus (who correctly predicted the results of eight football matches in the 2010 World Cup), Ken was presented with photos of potential pairings, each accompanied by a tasty morsel. The ‘Nostradamus of the Octopus World’ then set the wheels of fate in motion by picking the tastiest twosome to go on dates on Valentine’s Day.
The campaign accompanied the launch of a series of extremely desirable Valentine’s cocktails by The Kraken Black Spiced Rum: ‘Any Port In A Storm’ – a devilishly dark cocktail that strikes your heart like an arrow from Cupid with distinctive taste notes of ginger beer and port; ‘Kraken’s Revenge’ – a crimson concoction to match any burning Valentine’s Day desire, bleeding swirls of apple cider and laced with blackcurrant cordial; and ‘The Kraken’s Heart’ – the blackest cocktail for all the dark souls out there, as if dyed by the Kraken’s own ink intensified with lashes of black stout.
We had over 400 lonely hearts enter for a chance to be matched by Ken. Among the lucky couples treated to a date night by The Kraken was columnist Ellen Scott who gave a very descriptive account of her evening in the Metro. Further coverage included print in the Daily Star, and online articles in London On The Inside and TrendHunter amongst others.
