Binge-watching is a cultural phenomenon without comparison. In fact, almost two thirds of Britons today proudly identify as binge-watchers, worshipping the gods of streaming and devouring entire Netflix series in a single sitting.
This summer, paradise awaited for the nation’s binge-watchers in the form of the world’s first ever binge-watching hotel: a luxury getaway we created for Three, in association with Samsung, where everything was dedicated solely to the art of binge watching.
On arrival guests of the Bed N Binge Retreat were given a Samsung Galaxy S8 to binge on, before spending their one-night bingeing getaway in immersive rooms inspired by Netflix shows, including the Stranger Things Suite (complete with alphabet lights, a warping wall to the Upside Down and countless 80s pop culture references); the Orange Is The New Black Suite (a faithful recreation of a Litchfield penitentiary prison room) and the House of Cards Suite (mixing White House splendour with election paraphernalia and the show’s dark symbol: the inverted American flag).
As well as adjustable bingeing docks by the beds, each suite came complete with hands-free docks in both toilets and showers for guest’s devices – ensuring there were absolutely no restrictions to bingeing at any point in a guest’s stay, even in the bathroom. Guests could order Netflix-themed food and drink from the room service menu and were even given the option to dress up like some of their favourite characters. What’s more, to make sure they were in peak bingeing condition, we offered ‘Binge Body Ready’ workouts: exercises that could be completed while binge-watching.
Unlike traditional hotels the Bed N Binge Retreat shunned cash tills and card machines for the only form of currency that matters: binge-watching. Indeed, the only way to pay for a stay at the Bed n Binge Retreat was by bingeing – be that for a few hours or with an all-night Netflix marathon.
We created the Bed N Binge Retreat to coincide with the announcement of ‘Go Binge’: a new service from Three which lets new and existing customers stream services such as Netflix on their devices without this coming from their data allowance.
The resulting media coverage for the Bed N Binge Retreat has been enough to binge on, with over 120 pieces of coverage landing across nationals, trend sites, consumer lifestyle, tech, listings, regional and even international titles. Highlights to date include Digital Spy, MTV, BBC Newsbeat, The i, Daily Star, Evening Standard, Independent, Metro, Cosmo, Grazia, BuzzFeed, Comedy Central, MSN, Good Housekeeping and Lonely Planet.
Eager binge-watchers were quick to check-in to the retreat with guests including journalists from Daily Mirror, Vice, Grazia, Cosmo, Evening Standard, Comedy Central, Closer, Digital Spy, Chat, Pick Me Up and OK! Magazine to name just a few, as well as members of the public who were keen to get in on the action.
