A new style of seat appeared recently on Mexico City’s metro system, complete with a moulded male torso and protruding penis. Immediately labeled as inappropriate, uncomfortable and embarrassing, the seat has been the subject of a video which has received some 700 000 views in the past 10 days.
But it seems the negative response is exactly what the authors of the idea were hoping for. The explanation next to the men-only label read: “It is uncomfortable to sit here, but that is nothing compared to the sexual violence that women suffer on their daily journeys.”
Although not a permanent fixture, the seat is part of a campaign launched by UN Women and the Mexico City authorities called #NoEsDeHombres, which aimed to highlight sexual harassment on public transport.
