Clarkson effect: why men give up on fashion at 37
Posted on 20 August, 2012
There comes a stage in every man’s life when he enters a menswear department when and tells himself: I give up. According to research we conducted the average age for that fashion paralysis to strike is 37 – and that’s according to 1,000 40+ years women we polled for fashion retailer isme.com
While it’s possible to go out on a Friday night to see men old enough to be your Dad dressed like a reject from One Direction that’s desperation and nothing to do with good taste. So what do most most British men do? They turn into Jeremy Clarkson. Famed for his ill-fitting faded denim jeans and jacket combo, Clarkson is the man most women said their partner dressed like. Guess which man they wished he’d dress more like? Yep George Clooney.
As our isme story revealed that’s why 37% of women now do ALL of the clothes shopping for their husband. An even bigger number said they deliberately buy clothing items for their other half simply in order to get them to wear more contemporary, smarter clothing. Otherwise, 1 in 4 women said their husband would only buy clothes when their existing items fell apart and then based on price and value rather than fit, shape or look.
The story was covered on page 3 of the Daily Mail, The Daily Star, The Daily Telegraph and The Sun.
